Become an independent contractor they said; but no-one said I’d have no rights!
In 2016, Quartz published an article which discusses the myths surrounding the benefits of the emerging on-demand or gig economy.
Often we see cycles of industrial reform and this emerging economy could well be the beginning of another. Western society spent decades building up and protecting the rights of workers which are now being challenged.
How long will it be before the worm turns for those organisations taking advantage?
There is a perception forming that the rise in the gig economy or freelance work is contributing to a reduction in hard earned labour market reform and reducing income and retirement benefits that more traditional work provides. This perception is largely being driven by the likes of Uber and Deliveroo who engage people who really look and act like employees as “independent contractors” without the usual entitlements to things such as annual leave, sick leave and Superannuation. This however should not be confused with the independent consultant who has traditionally offered their services to organisations at rates commensurate with their expertise.
